Advent #3: Journey to Bethlehem
Luke 2; Matthew 1
Joseph and Mary were obligated to go on a “road trip”—decreed by the Roman Emperor.
- 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.” Luke 2:4-5 (NIV)
Their journey: A 90-100 mile walk; most likely an 8-10 day journey, with danger of bandits and robbers.
Bethlehem: a small town in Judea, of the tribe of Judah and King David; known for raising sheep and lambs to be used for sacrifice in the Temple in Jerusalem.
“ While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,
7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” Luke 2:6-7 (NIV)
