About Us

Welcome!

Who We Are

Sebastopol Christian Church is a community of people who desire to know and follow Jesus Christ. We are a multi-generational church with people from all ages and backgrounds. Founded in 1966, we are a church near downtown Sebastopol that exists to serve Sonoma County and the world. Here are some of our other features:

  • We Believe: The Bible is our highest authority for our faith and practice
  • We are nondenominational, autonomous and self-governing (by a Board of Elders)
  • We are not legalistic
  • We believe that God calls every Christ follower to serve, and they should serve in areas in which God has gifted them
  • We actively serve the homeless in our community each week
  • We give a good portion of our offerings to missionaries, locally and globally
  • We strive to be a church that is a loving, caring family
  • We want to make the name of Jesus honored and famous in our community
  • We believe that one of the best ways to demonstrate our love for God, is to practice loving our neighbors as ourselves

Our Vision Statement

Sebastopol Christian Church exists to build a family of hope-filled followers of Jesus who bring others into a growing relationship with our Creator.

Our Statement of Faith

Sebastopol Christian Church is a fellowship of Believers who desire to be Christians only... nothing more and nothing less. This means that we acknowledge Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and the Bible as the only authority for what we believe and practice.

God: Creator of the Universe, our world and everything in it (Acts 17:24); Holy (morally perfect and without sin), spiritual being, all knowing, all powerful, everywhere present, a complex unity, eternally existent in three distinct personalities - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit - one God (Exodus 3:14-15, John 4:24, Matthew 28:19, John 1:1-3).

Jesus Christ is God: Jesus became "God in the flesh" when He voluntarily set aside His glory in Heaven and became a Human Being (John 1:1-14). He was born through the miracle of a virgin birth and lived a sinless life, was crucified and died physically as a substitutionary payment to atone for our sins and was physically resurrected from the grave (Matthew 1:18-25, 1 Corinthians 15:3-8). After rising from the dead, Jesus ascended into Heaven (Acts 1:9), and He will return in bodily form as Lord of the Universe, to gather His Followers and judge those who have rejected Him (Acts 1:9-11, Hebrews 9:27-28).

The Holy Spirit is God: He convinces each person of his/her sin, of God's righteousness, and of the judgement to come (John 16:8-10). He glorifies Jesus and tries to persuade each person to trust in and follow Jesus. Once a persom trusts their life to Jesus as Lord and Savior, The Holy Spirit then indwells the Christ follower (Romans 5:5; Ephesians 1:13-14). He teaches, equips and empowers us to become more like Jesus in thought, word, actions and character (Romans 8:5-14).

Sin: Men and women were created in the image of God, but are now separated from God by sin. Sin is missing the mark of God's righteous commands for our behavior. All people have sinned (Romans 3:23). Sin is lawlessness (1 John 3-4), meaning that those attitudes that oppose God's law or will not submit to His authority in our lives, comfirm us as Sinners (Romans 5:12-21). Jesus died in our place so that our sins might be forgiven.

Salvation: Faith (belief and trust) in Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross, is the only way to be reconciled with God (Acts 4:8-12). Salvation cannot be earned; it is offered through Jesus based on grace, not merit. What we couldn't do for ourselves (reconcile with God), Jesus did through His death on the cross (Ephesians 2:8-9). God lovingly offers salvation to every person, and every person has the freedom to accept or reject this gift at any time (John 3:16-18). Faith comes by hearing the good news message about Jesus, believing that He is the Son of God, that He died for our sins, was buried and was raised from the dead on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Saving faith requires repentance (changing our lives to conform our lifestyle to Christ's), and results in obedience. Baptism by immersion publicly expresses our willingness to live for Him and in submission to His leadership (Acts 8:26-38), Romans 6:1-4).

The Bible: The Bible is a library of books, written by approximately 40 Authors over a 2,000 year period of time. "All Scripture is God-breathed", meaning the God was actively involved, influencing the Prophet and Human Authors to communicate God's message to Mankind. Therefore, the Bible is our sole authority for faith and practive. All our beliefs for faith and Christian living come from the Bible (2 Timothy 3:15, 2 Peter 1:21)

The Church: The Church of Jesus Christ is not limited to any one institution or denomination; it consists of all who have trusted Jesus Christ for redemption of the sins and forgiveness. Each local church or gathering of Church Followers meets regularly for worship, prayer, fellowship and teaching from the Bible. Sebastopol Christian is, therefore, but one local congregation, and is part of the greater Church. (1 Corinthians 12:12-17).
